"...schlimmer ists man hat kein Zimmer..."

I am in Berlin. But at "my" place in Berlin, (which is really Wo's place) it is a bit, hm, say unconfortable at the moment. Some things have changed since I have been here for the last time. Then, there were a lot of mailboxes in the entrances. Those of the people who still lived there and some of the people who did not live there anymore. One day, when I came down Wo's was gone. I suspected the owner of the house that he had taken it down deliberately because he was furious with Wo's being so obstinate about the planned construction works. Wo complained and the postbox, was set up again. His matter has more or less been settled, not really in the way the owner of the house had wished it went. Now, they finally started with the construction work some weeks ago. There are no more postboxes, except for one, where it says "Schwarz, Luz". The house is empty, except for Wo's flat, there is a sign at the door, that the flat is still occupied and whoever wants to enter has to contact the property management. When I arrived yesterday at eleven I ignored the warning, and went in. But then it turned out, that there was no electricity, "oh well there are candles in the kitchen I thought." and went for them. I became suspicious however and tried the gas pipe. Nothing. I became even more suspicious and tried the water pipe. Nothing of course. I called a friend, hoping that I could maybe move to his place for the days. Of course it seems he is not here. I had to go to the bath room urgently, so I considered shortly to go to the back yard which is full of trash anyway. But then I left for Falafal Daye at Danziger Strasse. There I got used to the idea of living in a squat for some days. Hey, it's worse if you have no home, no bed, nothing. This morning I went down to the side building to check whether there was still water and I could carry up some. Of course not. Then I left for the swimming pool to get an expensive shower with some exercise for free. It's not so bad, if it's for just a couple of days, and you have money. But yes the water is a problem. The toilet you, see... Stupid idea these water closets. And I will have to bring my mobile to a friends place this afternoon, it needs some charging... Depending of what I do, I could also bring a sleeping bag and stay at their place, that would pay a nice shower on sunday morning. We will see...

Hi Magdalena,

Wo's Weblog: Home(less)
After nine good months in Canberra (and a couple of conferences in Sydney and Armidale), I'm back in Berlin -- awaiting unemployment, homelessness and death. I'll probably be somewhat slow catching up with emails since I don't have electricity at hom...

About

My name is Magdalena Luz. I grew up in Switzerland. I studied physics at Humboldt University Berlin, where I used to live in "Nordkapstrasse" (North Cape street). That's how this blog got its name. After a short intermezzo in Copenhagen, DK, I live now in the amazing city of Wuppertal. This is a place the wild, wild West of Germany, built on 7 hills, (which is really the only thing it has in common with Rome) It is populated by the strange species of homo germanicus occidens communis, also known as 'gemeiner Wessi'. And even with her it is light years away from ever being like Berlin.
